The Bitchy Gardener’s Plant Of The Day

Columbine

Since I am doing more gardening than bitching and blogging, I thought I would start a new feature to keep me engaged in posting during the summer. I will admit that it is a little selfish of me to do this because I get to share my garden, one of my favourite places; and I also get to complete a quick and easy plant-inspired blog. Both gardening and blogging are my versions of affordable therapy, so I am getting double the therapy. I call that a win, win.

Don’t expect Latin or scientific names in this blog. I can neither pronounce nor spell those words. What I can do is tell you why I love a particular plant, how I use it, and show you some pics. Kind of a less-is-more gardening blog. Hope you enjoy it.

Today’s plant is Columbine. I love this plant. It looks both elegant and dainty, especially with its fine stems and lacy leaves, not to mention exotic because of its unusual flowers. This perennial loves the sun and is hardy through zones 3 to 8. It self seeds and can sometimes multiply so next spring you have even more of these beautiful flowers. Columbines come in various colours and remind me of an Asian dance troupe costumed in silk as they gently blow in a breeze.

Thank you for reading

    1. The first time I saw one was when I lived in Ontario. When I moved home to Nova Scotia, it was years before they showed up in local nurseries. It is hardy so Maine seems like the perfect home for it.

  1. A two for one therapy special is a double win. It seems many people find solace in a garden. My wife loves her flowering plants. Even someone who doesn’t have a green thumb like me can appreciate the love and care she puts into them.

  2. You are right and I never put it together before: gardening and blogging are my versions of affordable therapy. Mine too.

I’ve never tried to grow Columbines. They’re beautiful flowers but I rarely see them around here.

  3. I’ve always wondered what that beautiful flower is called. Now I know! I don’t garden but I LOVE flowers and plants and buy them and then ask my guy to dig them into our garden or in planters in our back deck. So, I guess in that way, I do garden. 🙂
