Have you seen the Buzz? Or to be more specific, have seen the commercial for the Buzz. It has been playing over and over during the BlueJays baseball games. The Buzz is an EV van made by Volkswagon. It is cute. It is colourful. And it is fun, or at least marketed as fun.
Just watch the commercial.
I love this ad. Never before have I seen an auto ad that actually inspired me. Not to mention, make me want to dance. Never before have I seen one that actually made me feel like purchasing the vehicle it was promoting. We all know that I do not need a new vehicle. My electric Kona is just under two years old, and I am still madly in love with it. But I wasn’t inspired to purchase it from an ad. I did my homework for that decision.
But the Buzz spoke to me. Well it spoke to a younger me. The me of over thirty years ago, the working mom of a two year old, stepmom to a thirteen and a fifteen year old. A mom who was constantly tired and was definitely not having any fun. It spoke to the mom I wanted to be. The cool, fun mom that was so far away from my reality. Oh if I could do it all again, only this time driving a Buzz, who knows how my life would have changed.
I thought about which colour of Buzz I preferred. The yellow one, because I have a soft spot for certain shades of yellow. Or perhaps the turquoise one because it was soooo cool. Then there was that great electric shade of blue. I just couldn’t make up my mind. Whatever great colour I ended up with would have surely changed my life, or at least my interpretation of my life.

The commercial is successfully selling me a dream of a different lifestyle. Admit it, we have all had that dream. But it isn’t that dream that is keeping me awake. It is the song playing over and over in my head every night when I hit the pillow. As much as I love the playful and fun aspect of this song, the ear worm it has created has become a bit of a nightmare, to the point where I now mute the commercial every time it plays during the ballgame.
I can’t resist though, I have to ask,
What colour would you choose?
And,
Are you having any fun?
Thank you for reading

Actually, they are quite expensive here in Canada, so I will just keep dreaming and driving my Kona, which is a nice little sporty number.

That is a great commercial! I’ve seen a few of those around town… a green one just last Friday. I’m so jealous of your EV Kona. I had one and LOVED it so much. Unfortunately, it had a battery issue and Hyundai had to buy it back from me. Then I got a Tesla (before Elon went nuts) and I don’t like it nearly as much. We are about to trade it for an Ionic 5, which will make it the fourth EV I’ve owned. I will never go back to gas.

I do love the commercial and I really still love my Kona. Fingers crossed that my battery will last. The Ionic 5 looks like a great vehicle as well. Hope you end up loving it!

I’ve seen that ad and yes, it’s a good one. I was never much attracted to the VW vans but I can see why you would want this one!

Just dreaming mostly and remembering another time when I would’ve been the target market of the VW. In reality, my Kona is a lovely vehicle and has a higher mileage range than the Buzz. But that commercial is great.

It is a great spot! I’d happily go and live in it. But something in me resists the product, as if it’s just trying too hard. However, if I had to. choose, probably the orange!

Yes the commercial is definitely overplaying the reality of owning the vehicle. It is marketing at its best.

I’ve seen the commerical. I remembered it more from the woman’s voice singing because she sounds like she is having fun. I’m like you and feel the need to do a ton of research before buying a vehicle. Nothing worse than the feeling of either being ripped off or pressured by some overzealous dealer. I just walk out then.

It is that woman’s voice that is my current ear worm. I do love the commercial but really couldn’t afford the vehicle and also have no need for it at this stage of my life. But thirty years ago I was mostly driving a great big Ford Aerostar van that I hated. It was my husband’s, and we used it for family transport. I owned a smaller Ford Escort that required a lot less gas. However my distance to work was very short relative to his so to conserve gas, I drove the big monster. It was not fun.

what a wonderful ad and product, and I’d choose yellow so I could buzz around like a bee in my buzz

It is a great yellow.

Is that what these vehicles are called! I see one going up and down our street but I’ve never caught the name. Memorable, yes. Groovy, for sure. I’d pick yellow and name it Buttercup. 💛

Buttercup is perfect.

I’m Team Turquoise, and that’s a great ad campaign!

It really is a great campaign. I do like that turquoise colour. It invokes days at the beech.

I actually just saw the add last night for the first time. (Not a baseball fan) What caught my eye was the warped bicycle tire, and then I watched the rest of the ad. I’d get a turquoise one 😊 Maggie

I couldn’t help but notice that bicycle tire as well. A kid making the best of the situation. The ad really does focus on life’s little details. Turning things into a glass-half-full situations.
That turquoise colour is absolutely fabulous. It is kind of nice that colourful cars are coming back.

it’s definitely nice that colourful cars are coming back – most of the ones over here nowadays are that ‘road-grey’ colour – yuck – and pretty dangerous too as you won’t stand out to other traffic so are liable to get hit in that colour.

I don’t get to see any commercials at all – mainly as I don’t have a telly. But I’m wondering whether that’s what my neighbour’s daughter is turning up in next door – she’s just bought an electric VW camping van which looks quite like that – aerodynamic and not too large for our lanes in Britain. When I saw hers I quite fancied one too (my parents always had camping vans).
I like yellow cars and could have bought my new one in yellow but I think I’m fussy about the shade and also wondering whether it really does suit large cars. So in the end I just went for another red car.

Must be what she has. I can’t imagine VW makes two different ones but I could be wrong. It would be interesting to see one up close.

I’d love a look around inside – always fascinating to see how they’ve designed the layout in a camping van

I’ve never seen the commercial.as I rarely watch them but the song is catchy. The kid on the bent tire bike also stuck with me! I’d go turquoise or burnt orange

Yes the kid with the bent tire was making a great glass-half-full statement. I can picture a turquoise or burnt orange bus vividly standing out while driving through the prairies.

Alas, I drive a grey hybrid – only colour available quickly (pandemic times) after the 4th run in with deer toasted my old red SUV

I don’t watch a lot of live TV and had missed that commercial so far. There’s something about VW that always seems fun, you know? I’m also straddling between yellow and turquoise.

I always equated VW vans with free spirited fun people. The yellow and turquoise were my favs as well.
