I Need Playmates

Now doesn’t that sound like a whine from a pathetic friendless lonely person who spends her days pining for a life filled with people and social events. I assure you that this is not the case.

Although I could probably count the total number of friends I possess on less than two hands; and although I do spend a lot of time by myself, I am definitely not pathetic. I actually enjoy my life. Well at least I do ninety percent of the time. I do what I want, when I want and interact with people when desired. Usually one friend at a time.

Each of my friends travel in their own circles. The only thing they have in common is that they all made the effort to include me as their friend. Personally, when it comes to friends, I prefer quality over quantity so I am overjoyed to have these people in my life.

Just this week, I found something I think would be fun to do with more than one friend at a time. Mind you these friends probably wouldn’t be as excited about this as I am so just finding a single playmate could be iffy.

Growing up in a house full of kids, there were always board games around that we would break out on rainy or winter days. Monopoly was the favourite of my second oldest brother. He liked to win no matter what the game was. He won all my allowance in poker one summer because I knew squat about poker and because, at that time, I idolized this bother and couldn’t say no. He is now a millionaire while I am too embarrassed to state my final salary. That brother conned me out of so much of my allowance over the years that I feel dumb just thinking about it. So I will stop dwelling on these things because I can’t afford the required therapy.

We also played Clue and Sorry and Bug Out, which wasn’t a board game but was a riot. I loved Chinese Checkers and regular checkers, but could never master Chess like my eldest brother did.

With my girlfriend, I played The Game Of Life. The one where you get an education and a career, then get married and rack up kids because kids meant more money in the end. You car filled up with little pink and blue pegs to represent the size of your family. Boy what an outdated fantasy that is. Not everyone wants to get married; and these days, not everyone identifies as male or female. Plus kids are damn expensive. But that’s beside the point because when we were younger, I loved that game. We still have it around the house somewhere from when JT was younger.

So imagine my surprise when I saw online a new version of this game. The Game of Life: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel edition. Now this is something I would love to play with a group of girlfriends.

Here is what Amazon says about the game:

  • INSPIRED BY THE SERIES: The Game of Life game takes players back to the 1950s New York City to experience the world of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
  • Find your calling: in this edition of the game of life, players choose a path seeking fame and fortune, and chase their dreams In 1950S new York city
  • What’s your Destiny?: Imagine making it big in the big Apple as you move through life’s ups and downs. You could end up at a million-dollar Townhouse or a dumpy basement apartment
  • Make it as a stand-up: if you take a chance and give up all your money trying to become a famous comedian, you just might instantly win the game
  • FUN PARTY GAME: The Game of Life: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Edition board game is a great choice for your next party or get together with friends

To my knowledge, none of my friends have ever watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel so they may not be in the know about the characters and plot lines. They wouldn’t know that Lenny Bruce is a recurring character on the show, and that he has a thing for Midge Maisel. They wouldn’t be aware that Midge, a divorced women with two kids, is trying to make it as a comic in a world of men. They wouldn’t understand Suzie’s character and her penchant for the word fuck. I am sure that the game doesn’t include the word fuck, but I could toss it in a few times to add authenticity.

I am such a big fan of this show that I personally think this game would be great fun. But finding playmates who would feel the same way could be tricky. The only other person I know who watches The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is The Doc, because he watches it with me; and although he seems to enjoy the show, he has never really been much of a game person so I guess I will have to keep looking.

Thank you for reading.

  1. That just looks like our really old monopoly board and pieces! I have to say I find monopoly too long so I’m not keen on it. I tend to like simple or inane board games – my absolute favourite is ‘Snakes & Ladders’ followed by Ludo but I mostly stick to playing cards. I don’t play solitaire style stuff that much, I play both hands of all the card games I know. My memory is fairly duff so I never know what the other hand has and, even if I remember, I treat it as if I’m genuinely another person and don’t know and just play the hand I’d play anyway.

  2. I’m not familiar with the show. Your remembrances of board games remind me of the many hours my brothers and I spent doing the same. I’ve always been good with mental math, and I attribute some of that to countless monopoly games and exchanging play money.

  3. Despite the complete dysfunctionality of my family whilst growing up, we did manage to tolerate one another long enough to play board games, with some degree of regularity. And my love for such has continued to this day. As I type this, my desk is next to a huge cabinet that is crammed with at least 50 different games of all kinds. (Some of them we haven’t touched in years, granted, but others are well worn.) These days, we tend to play more card games, especially Spades, but the Scrabble board, various Trivial Pursuit sets and whatnot never really gather any dust…

  4. My wife and sons are big fans of the The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but I’ve yet to watch it. Sounds like I should be. And I have fond remembrances of the Game of Life… (and the cereal) 🙂
